VPS Bandwidth

This section provides a thorough explanation of bandwidth, which is actually an important factor in achieving "fast and stable response" with VPS.

What is VPS bandwidth?

The bandwidth of a VPS refers to the communication speed or transfer rate allocated to the VPS server; it indicates how fast the communication speed (both download and upload) is for accessing the VPS.

VPS services are often listed under "network" in the basic specifications.

The bandwidth of a VPS network basically refers to the total data transfer rate of upstream and downstream (download and upload). It will also be a shared network unless otherwise stated.

Why is bandwidth important?

Bandwidth is one of the most important factors in using a VPS. This is because low bandwidth slows down the access speed to the VPS and slows down the site display speed, which leads to user stress.

Therefore, bandwidth selection is very important for fast and stable site operation.

In addition, for sites with high traffic, additional fees are usually charged if the default transfer rate is exceeded.

How to read VPS bandwidth specs

The unit for network bandwidth is "bps (bits per second)". The higher the number, the faster the communication speed.

Next, you can determine the overall specifications by whether the network is shared or dedicated, and whether the communication is internal or external.

Once you know these, you can make an assumption about how fast the VPS server you signed up for is capable of delivering.

1Gbps class

If the VPS network is "1Gbps", it is the highest specification for a VPS network and the bandwidth allocated to the higher grade of VPS service. In this class, some providers may appeal it as a "gigabit line".

With this amount of bandwidth available, server response is almost never delayed due to network factors unless there is a very large concentration of accesses.

In the case of VPS providers that can link VPS servers (instances) internally, 1Gbps is a common specification for the internal network only.

100Mbps class

The 100Mbps class is the most common bandwidth for entry to middle grade VPS services. Basically, it can be used for any purpose, and it provides high-speed response even during times when many accesses are concentrated.

A 100Mbps class VPS is more than sufficient for a website up to medium size, but for services that constantly transfer large files, the communication speed can become a bottleneck.

In such cases, it is usual to devise a way to avoid using the bandwidth of the VPS by sending large file transfers to a CDN or similar service.

10Mbps class

Although not often seen as a VPS network, a network bandwidth of 10 Mbps is a low bandwidth for a VPS.

At this speed, it is difficult to publish as a web server for the majority of the public, and only a server for personal use can meet the requirements.

If you are planning to publish a web site, you should not choose a 10Mbps class VPS.
